Questions about Backflow

Here at Simply Backflow we are frequently asked questions concerning backflow and backflow testing. Today we will answer some of the questions we find are asked most often. First we will address the question “What is Backflow”. Backflow is any undesirable flow of water or mixtures of water and other liquids, gases, or other substances due to backpressure or backsiphonage in the distribution pipes of your potable water supply. This is most frequently caused when a pipe bursts, a pipe freezes, or the demand for water supply is unexpectedly raised. This causes contaminated water from the ground or other sources to enter your clean water supply.

The second question we will address is “what is a certified backflow tester”. A certified backflow assembly tester is a person who has experience and proven ability in field testing backflow prevention assemblies to the satisfaction of the administrative authority having jurisdiction over the area. A Los Angeles backflow tester is certified to perform field tests and prepare reports on backflow prevention assemblies is familiar with all laws, rules, and regulations in Los Angeles County, and they must have had experience in plumbing or pipe fitting or other equivalent qualifications in the opinion of the authority that has jurisdiction over the area.

The third question we will address today is “what is a backflow prevention test”. A backflow prevention test is done to ensure that you clean water supply is not experiencing any backflow. In Los Angeles County it is required by law to have an annual backflow test on all commercial properties and some residential properties. This is required by law because if you clean water supply is being contaminated by backflow you can be causing serious health risks to everybody who comes into contact with this water. It is essential to get a backflow prevention test every year to ensure the safety of those who come into contact with the water at your business or residence.
